More than 450 people attended the Breast Cancer Issues Conference, between Portland and five simulcast sites in Bend, Eugene / Springfield, Medford, Newport, and Roseburg, earlier this month! Photos and select session videos can be found on the BCI Conference web page.

 

We partner with Medical Foundation of Marion Polk Counties, Northwest Family Services, and Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, on our Latina Initiative. Community health workers from these organizations educate their communities on the importance of screening in the early detection of breast cancer. They seek out and help eligible Latinas to overcome barriers to care, assisting them in getting their clinical breast exam and mammogram, as well as in understanding the results. If additional diagnostic testing or treatment is needed, the community health worker facilitates a warm handoff to a patient navigator.

 

EUGENE RACE FOR THE CURE

The morning was wild with snow, rain and sunshine. But most of all, it was filled with much hope, strength and joy. More than 1,000 people (and pooches!) came together as a community to celebrate survivors and forever fighters, to raise $150,000 for services and programs in the region, and to have a good time. Thank you for your all of your support in the Eugene Race for the Cure. LUNCH FOR THE CURE

Together, business and community leaders, and survivors, forever fighters, and their loved ones recognize the importance of investing in saving lives and making progress in the fight against breast cancer. We are honored to have Dr. Brian Druker, M.D., Director of OHSU Knight Cancer Institute as the keynote speaker at Lunch for the Cure. WATERCRAFT ON THE WATER

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 

Are you looking for professional experience in an organization? Great internship opportunities are available for the spring and summer!

Internships are a great way to gain experience and support Komen Oregon and SW Washington. Interns work approximately 20-40 hours per week in volunteer management, community programs, communications, and with Race for the Cure. It's an experience you won't forget!

 

PEOPLE AND PROJECTS  

The Portland Police Bureau and Portland Police Association joined forces with Susan G. Komen Oregon and SW Washington in the fight again breast cancer last fall. As several officers at the bureau have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Chief Michael Marshman, with a personal connection to breast cancer, and the bureau took action. Pink police-issued patches, pins, shoelaces, and car and motorcycle ribbon decals sparked conversations with the public. Ann Berryman and Andrew Asato were honored to receive $5,035 from the entire bureau. THANK YOU!
